NOx Reduction Applications: Nitric Acid Plants
The CRI Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology is
regarded as the premier NOx reduction technology for nitric
acid plants worldwide in terms of performance, reliability,
operational benefits and cost effectiveness. CRI SCR systems
are successfuly operating on nitric acid plants ranging from
225 to 2000 tpd in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and
Africa.
Ask plant operators what they appreciate most about our system,
and they'll tell you:
• Reliability
• Ease of operation
• Low-cost installation
• Long catalyst
life
• Low operating costs
Outstanding reliability
The CRI SCR system has a proven track record for reliability,
with continuous achievement of low NOx emissions with virtually
no NH 3 slip, even from high inlet NOx levels.
Ease of operation
The high activity and buffer capacity of the CRI SCR catalyst
technology delivers excellent controllability and consistently
low NOx and NH 3 emissions, even under varying load conditions.
Flexible installation
The CRI SCR technology can be installed in either the high-pressure
position before the expander or in the low-pressure position
after the expander, and across a wide range of temperatures,
as low as 300° F (150° C) or as high as 700° F
(375° C) which makes installation possible when space
is limited in one of the locations. The high activity catalyst
and a compact reactor design conserve space and costs wherever
the SCR is installed.
INSTALLATION OPTIONS FOR THE CRI SCR SYSTEM

Easy retrofit to replace existing high-cost technologies
For high-pressure systems, retrofit of the CRI SCR catalyst
involves the simple replacement of existing radial catalyst
reactor internals by a CRI Lateral Flow Reactor (LFR) catalyst
module inside the pressure vessel.
Low operating costs
Both low- and high-pressure installations benefit from the
very low pressure drop of the CRI system. This keeps operating
costs low, potentially increasing acid plant throughput and
accelerating financial pay-back when compared to other SCR
or catalytic abator systems or caustic scrubbers. In addition,
the low temperature capabilities of the CRI SCR catalyst
eliminates the requirement for flue gas reheating necessary
for other technologies.
Deep NOx conversion
The CRI SCR technology has proven to consistently deliver
over 95% NOx conversion from more than 5000 ppm inlet NOx
concentrations.
Comprehensive service
CRI can provide additional components for an integrated SCR
system. For both high- and low-pressure locations, CRI can
supply the SCR catalyst, catalyst modules, ammonia injection
grid, and the atmospheric reactor house or pressure vessel,
when needed.
